Please stop comforting yourself with bullshit stories about how violent media is making us mindless, violent zombies. Please stop trivializing things like this by saying we need more religion in our lives. And while I admire wanting to step up efforts to make sure people like this lunatic don't get their hands on absurd arsenals, it's merely a half hearted...and half assed solution.
No. It's time we stop dancing around the issue of mental illness. I know, I get it. We're a proud nation. We don't want to admit to ourselves the system could ever fail people. But it's time to have a serious discussion. I don't have any freaking clue what can be done to better deal with this, but I do know admitting there's a problem is a good first step (Yep, just like addiction).
But in the sea of what ifs....What if the movie wasn't so violent....what if God was there...what if you couldn't legally obtain these weapons.....isn't it nice to know that there's one certainty? That some people just need HELP.
Sincerely,
One of those weird quiet loners the media warns you about after this stuff happens.

It isn't the violent media making us violent, we're that way to begin with (excess violence in the media can aggravate that, but not cause it). It's a fallen world, and sometimes people do awful things because they're mentally unbalanced and spiritually oppressed and they need all the help they can get (but then, we all do sometimes, it's just that some people need a LOT more than others). I agree that more religion isn't going to help, but I also think people need to let God work in their hearts and minds. More of a relationship thing instead of a religion (not trying to foist my beliefs on you, just stating what they are. You can disagree all you want, I'd still go bowling with you). And I definitely don't think we need to limit access to guns to keep them away from the crazy people (wouldn't work anyway; since when do psychotics let the law get in the way of what they want to do?), but rather make sure more sane people are armed than crazy people (and given my pulp villain roots, I'd prefer a disintegrator pistol, thankyewverymuch).
In short, I don't have any ready answers as to why this happened. I agree with you that we need to be willing to admit that some people are crazy (and that some things are definitively wrong). We also need to be willing to do what we can to help those people (even if that help is just keeping them from hurting themselves and other people).
No funny on my part either, sorry about that.
